Dr. Jeffery Straub joined the Institute for Healthy Singing & Voice Research in 2023. He is an otolaryngologist–head and neck surgeon specializing in laryngology, with fellowship training in the medical and surgical management of voice, airway, and swallowing disorders.

In this conversation he and the hosts stay close to the rehearsal room: when hoarseness is a week of patience and when it is a reason to stop, how a singer’s identity complicates rest, and why local access to voice care still matters in Kansas City.

“My path into this field grew from medical training and a personal passion for vocal performance rooted in my experiences as a singer.”

We talk about the difference between hygiene and heroics, what “see someone” should mean in a community choir, and how the Institute and clinical partners can stand beside a singer without turning every cough into a crisis.
