Christy Elsner is Founder and Artistic Director of the Allegro Choirs of Kansas City. Under her direction since 2000, Allegro has grown from one choir of 38 to six choirs with more than 250 singers — “the voice of angels,” in the words of The Kansas City Star.
She is also a Fellow of the Institute for Healthy Singing. This conversation ranges from honor choirs to Gadgets for Great Singing, and to the unfinished work of The Athletic Singer.
Children’s choirs are not a feeder system. They are the art, happening now, in smaller shoes.
Conversation overview
We ask how a treble rehearsal can be both exacting and kind, what directors misunderstand about the female changing voice, and why Kansas City’s young singers keep finding their way to Allegro’s rooms.
