Canon John Schaefer

Organist John Schaefer served as Canon Musician at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in downtown Kansas City for forty years and as University Organist at Park University for twenty-seven years, retiring in December 2016.
He holds an undergraduate degree in organ from Ohio State University, where he was an organ scholar of Wilbur Held, and the Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary in New York. He spent three years in post-graduate study with David Lumsden at New College, Oxford. He served as Organist and Choirmaster at the First Congregational Church of Columbus, Ohio, and at St. James Episcopal Church in Greenfield, Massachusetts, before coming to Kansas City in 1976.
He has been a faithful supporter of the Choral Foundation and the Festival Singers for over two decades, performing with numerous ensembles and serving on the Advisory Council and the Board of Trustees. He writes concert recommendations as a volunteer contributor for 91.9 Classical KC.
